A new app, Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System, aims to engage students in STEM fields.
Did you know that, currently, for every unemployed person in the United States there are nearly two jobs open in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)? This is an interesting factoid when thinking about the future of our students.
The trick is getting kids to take an interest in these fields. Two people are working to do just that with their first app, Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System. Available in the Apple App Store for $2.99 through their company Minilabs, this app is based on the children’s book Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space. Written by a quantum computer scientist and illustrated by an award-winning artist, this book takes you on the journey of an intelligent cat exploring the universe and its astrophysical mysteries.
The new app brings this book to life in an interactive, educational way. It’s designed for kids ages 7 to 10. The creators say that they developed Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System to take advantage of the time that kids are already spending on screens.
As parents grapple with how much screen time to give their kids, this app can help parents know that when their children are interfacing with a digital device, they’re learning something. The primary goal of the app is to blend fun and play seamlessly, encouraging kids to engage intellectually and instilling the belief that learning can be fun.
Full of engaging art, fun games, interesting questions, and positive reinforcement for learning, Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System is well worth the few bucks you’d spend to download it for your kids.
Minilabs hopes to continue their work by expanding to other apps addressing fields outside of science and targeting different age groups.
