Prevent Identity Theft During Your Black Friday And Cyber Monday Shopping Spree

Black Friday & Cyber Monday Identity Theft Tips

Every year, holiday shoppers race to the stores and crowd the aisles on Black Friday! On Cyber Monday, shoppers browse all different online sites for great deals! With all the shopping going on, it can be easy for an identity thief to strike. Keep your information protected whether you are shopping in the stores on Black Friday or online on Cyber Monday with these simple tips!

  • Be vigilant: Pay attention to your surroundings while you shop and while you are at the register. Keep your purse securely on your shoulder and keep your credit cards in your wallet until absolutely necessary. If using a debit card, cover your pin from the view of other shoppers in line as well as the cashier. If shopping online, make sure you erase all cookies and check that the URL of the payment part of the order starts with https:// or shttp://. If the page is secure it will also have a security icon like a padlock in one corner of the screen.
  • Limit the credit cards you use: You may have more than one credit card, but limit your holiday purchases to one or two cards, so you can handle any theft that could happen much easier.
  • Use cash/PayPal: Using cash to pay for your items is always safer than using a credit or debit card. It is one of the easiest ways to prevent falling victim to identity thieves. When shopping online it can be a little trickier. Paying through PayPal is the safest bet because sellers never see your credit card number or information.
